“Stepping Out” Mobility Training

The ability to travel independently on public transportation is something that many of our consumers aspire to do. “Stepping Out” mobility training, also called travel training, is a service designed to both assess a consumer’s aptitude to travel independently and to teach those consumers who can travel independently the best way to get to various places using public transportation. The ability to travel independently can be mastered even by those who can’t read by teaching them to identify landmarks, which will cue them to transfer busses or get off BART. It’s not uncommon for consumers who are very adept are traveling independently to need assistance in learning the right route to a location they’ve never traveled before, such as when one is beginning a new job in a section of town to which they don’t usually travel.
